Ice

Consider this - a slow-moving wall of ice advancing on homes in Millie Lacs, Minnesota. An ice heave or, as some called it, an ice tsunami:-

The following article describes how ice heaves form, and also points out that these particular ice heaves are normal for the Minnesota lakes where the above video was recorded in May 2013.

The tremendous power of lake ice

I'm now waiting for someone to incorporate an ice tsunami into their stories - a science fiction tale, perhaps, where it is a natural phenomenon; or a fantasy story where a vengeful sorcerer blights a lakeside community with a forceful demonstration of his arcane, icy power.

The phenomena of the real world defy the wildest imaginations of science fiction and fantasy writers, and confound our brightest scientists, more often than we would care to admit. But that's the fun part of science: the surprises.
